This may be Daffy’s greatest role. The exploding hot dog blew my mind. I can’t get enough of this.

Gametrailers.com is hosting a great 20 minute version of the forthcoming documentary Minecraft: The Story of Mojang by 2 Player Productions. I’m really excited about the full documentary and I’m taken by this statement from the game’s creator Notch: It’s hard to say, is it released? Is it not released?…What is the final version? I’ve […]

At Emerald City Comic Con this past year Billy West, Tara Strong, Maurice LaMarche, John DiMaggio, Kevin Conroy, Jess Harnell and Rob Paulsen did a reading of Star Wars in some of the voices that they’ve done over the years and it’s amazing. Pinky as a Storm Trooper talking to Bubbles as Darth Vader nearly […]

The people behind the PBS Digital Studio’s Off Book have been making really amazing short documentaries on current issues and the latest one is on Animation and Motion graphics. I like how they showed how the animator’s toolkit has grown with the increase of computers but that it’s still about process and exploration.

This animated history of LEGO is fantastic and weirdly feels like it stepped out of the Pixar universe. The shift from wooden toys to plastic bricks interestingly parallel’s Nintendo’s shift away from cards into toys, and eventually electronics. Bricks and bytes are mashed together in my head because of Douglas Coupland’s Microserfs and I can’t […]

I recently caught The Nerdist podcast with Billy West and and John DiMaggio, who are two amazing voice actors most known for being Frye and Bender on Futurama. If you weren’t aware, the show has been running again since June and the first episode The Bots and the Bees is a hilarious new start. John […]

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast Star Talk has an amazing episode on the history of video games with comedian Eugene Mirman, Jeff Ryan, author of “Super Mario – How Nintendo Conquered America” and Will Wright, the incredible creator of the SIM video games and Spore. I was surprised that deGrasse Tyson focused on violence in video […]

Joss Whedon stars in a short film written by a 4 year-old! I’m amazed by this whole Written by a Kid series. Via Neatorama

I love how this promo for The Hub’s Batman: The Animated Series recuts the show into the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises. It’s really incredible how these two series have really redefined the character. Even better, John Stewart indicated that he’s looking forward to all the Bain/Bane jokes that are inevitably going to happen. […]

I ran into this article from the Atlantic while pretending that I was going to get out of bed. On Thursday, Tunisian courts will hand down a verdict in the public prosecution of Nabil Karoui, chief of popular Tunisian broadcaster Nessma TV, for airing Satrapi’s film. The verdict will say a lot about the future […]

I was really taken by the short above by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the Gregory Brothers, and the ACLU. It does such a great job of using animation to demonstrate an individual’s rights to photograph the police in public spaces through a catchy song and the ghost of Benjamin Franklin. This has been such a huge topic […]

I hate to admit that I’d never heard of Peter Stephan Jungk’s book Perfect American before I read the about Philip Glass doing a stage production of the book. Michael Barrier has some real issues with the book, but it seems like it’d be an interesting read to get an idea of the popular myths […]

Sadly, the VLC app on the iPad choked on the 720p video of Mamoru Hosoda’s Summer Wars that I managed to find. But that just meant that I had to watch the movie on a laptop like Jobs intended. However, this hiccup didn’t take away from the resounding amount of pleasure that I took from […]

I recently saw this amazing piece of animation done using only Google Docs. It’s really impressive how people are able to use what are now basic business tools for decidedly non-business purposes. Also, it’s an indicator of the ubiquity of animation these days and how the rules of animation exist outside of cinema. Click here […]

The Vancouver International Film Festival 2010 (VIFF) gets underway this Thursday September 30th which means that my cheap downtown pizza consumption will skyrocket in the coming weeks. I’ve been working my way through the festival guide in both paper and app form and have found that I still prefer the paper guide. It bugs me […]

Recently Stephen Wichuk, Emily Carr’s awesome animation tech, gave me a DVD of animation by Vancouver’s own Stu Hughes and Ben Jacques who used to do animation under the name of Crystal Beard. I had seen some of their work when attending Animatron at Little Mountain studios a few years back, but this was the […]

I wish I had come up with “Kung Fusion,” but I didn’t. It’s the title of a chapter in Vijay Prashad’s book Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting: Afro-Asian Connections and the Myth of Cultural Purity, which is now on my must-read list. I’m happy to see that chapter is available in Google Books, so I […]

I’ve been thinking about the adoption of the martial arts in Western culture for a while. However, it’s really been on the front of my brain since this spring when watching The Boondocks. I had noticed it right from the title sequence where Huey is brandishing a sword. In particular I was really blown away […]
